Our Experience in the Surgical Treatment of the Multiorgan Echinococcosis

The frequency of echinococcosis in Bulgaria has been increasing in the last decade which makes it a serious health problem. Fifty one patients with echinococcosis with more than one organ involved were treated at the department of General and Pediatric Surgery of University Hospital in Stara Zagora between 1989−2004. The lungs and liver were affected in 26 cases, both lungs in 13 cases, the liver and the spleen in 7 cases and the liver, spleen and lungs − in 5 cases. The individual approach to the treatment of multiorgan echinococcosis was elective. Young patients with good general condition were treated in a single stage, while patients in poor general condition were treated in two stages.
